Central production site for butter and cheese

The Altmark-Käserei Uelzena GmbH was founded in 1991 as a subsidiary of Uelzena eG. At that time, the Uelzena Group invested into the Bismark site in the “new” federal state of Saxony-Anhalt by building a new cheese dairy, which started operation in 1992 as one of the most sophisticated facilities of its time. In 1997, a butter making plant was added and the production of German Premium Butter was relocated from Uelzen to Bismark.

Today, the Altmark-Käserei is the central production site of the Uelzena Group; it has been integrated into the two business units, Ingredients and Dairy Products.  With a staff of around 100, we produce foil-ripened Gouda and Edam type cheese in blocks for the processing food industry and cutting plants as well as German Premium Butter and baker’s butter for wholesalers, retailers and the bakery trade.


Modern technologies for milk processing

With our cheese and butter making business we are continuing the long tradition of milk processing at the Bismark site. We have the latest technologies and equipment for the processing of fresh regional milk into butter and cheese. Currently, we are investing again to secure the future of the Bismark site with plans to build an even larger cheese making facility equipped with the latest processing technology. In doing so, we are facing up to the growing challenges of the market. Upon completion of the building, we will be able to almost double our current annual capacity of approximately 32,000 t.

In our butter making facility we continuously operate a butter maker with a capacity of about 5,000 kg per hour. From the adjoining butter silo, the fresh butter is sent to the various packaging lines where it is packed and palletized in a fully automatic operation.

To ensure that we maintain our high production standards, we are frequently certified, for example according to ISO 9001 and IFS. Complete monitoring of the production process as well as the constant control of raw materials and finished goods in our own laboratory ensures consistently high product quality.


Sustainable production

For us as a production company, sustainability is a very important issue. It starts with the regional procurement of our milk and continues with resources-saving production equipment. We operate our own gas-fired co-generation plant, which ensures low-energy consumption for the efficient supply of electricity, heat and steam to our plant. Since 2012, we have a certified energy management system according to ISO 50001 in place. The continuous improvement of our energy efficiency will remain one of our central goals for the future.

Regional raw material: Milk

As a subsidiary of the cooperatively organized Uelzena Group we predominately process our own milk raw material.  We benefit from short transport routes due to our location in the middle of an important milk production area. The member dairies and milk supplying cooperatives of Uelzena eG collect the milk directly from the milk producers within the region and deliver fresh raw milk or cream to us day after day. For us, this means reliability in terms of raw material quality and quantity.
